Collateral Damage

This is a song I crafted a few months ago, inspired by the phasing experiments of Steve Reich.

It was "premiered" in the Chinatown basement of POMAR using a four channel amplifier setup. Each part of the song was routed to an amplifier in a different corner of the basement to immerse the listeners in the song. The listeners were encouraged to walk around the room, allowing the different parts to fade in and out and phase with one another.

Sleeping Bags

I haven't written as much about the Sleeping Bags as I probably should have. The record was recorded and mixed. Easter Everywhere pressed it onto vinyl. Then we played some shows. It was such a great feeling to have been a part of the process from it's infancy and see it through.

Unfortunately, Sleeping Bags will no longer be a "band" - at least for the near future.

Goblin Guts - Hectic Budnik

Goblin Guts is new musical project started by Nick Larson and Justin Hopkins. They're putting up all their music for free and so far everything about it is top notch, including the artwork. Each song has a custom image created by Nate James.

Rarebit - Emergence

Since I last wrote about Rarebit (http://combatdotcom.blogspot.com/2010/08/responsibility-stress-release-by.html), my good friend, Justin Hopkins, has been up to quite a lot. After the release of his EP on Non Projects records and putting together a live band to perform his electronic compositions, the next step was to record a full length album.

It's called Daizo and will be coming out on February 28th; once again on Non Projects. The album is already receiving a lot of deserved attention (not enough, though) so I'll just say, "Listen to it." Justin worked extremely hard on this one and pulled together some extremely talented musicians to perform on it.

Once again, I was lucky enough to play a very small role in the recording process of one of the tracks. It's called "Emergence" and I'm very proud of it.

I've been meaning to write something about Adam Mekrut (a.k.a. Soup) for a long time. He has become a very close friend of mine over the past couple years and I've enjoyed watching his musical progression. Although I didn't know him personally as a kid, I've seen some 10 year old footage that proves he's always been talented.

I was blown away when he sent me these songs. To be honest, I didn't know he had it in him.

Obi Lori - The World Below

Obi Lori has produced another wonderful piece of work entitled, The World Below. For this EP, she started working with synthesizers and exploring the new sounds and textures found in the instrument. Fortunately, her guitar playing is still prominent and as intricate and expressive as ever.

She was kind enough to have me craft an introduction to the title song, "The World Below". I was happy to do so and utilized some field recordings from my stay with her in France.

The Sleeping Bags are reuniting for another very special Easter Everywhere night.

"We will host a night bringing together song-based artists and experimental composers at Pehrspace in Echo Park.

The night, structured appropriately as Verse / Chorus / Verse / Chorus, will begin with a piece by Chris Kallmyer and Scott Cazan for two guitars and electronics. The group will surround the audience to create a rich sonic environment of incidental, environmental guitar, and feeding back room noise.

The piece will be followed by an acoustic set of songs performed by Scott Reitherman of Secretly Canadian's Throw Me The Statue. The band's elegant melange of power pop and melodic intricacy will be stripped to its core, with an intimate reading of the group's back catalog and forthcoming material.

Next, Cat Lamb brings a 40 minute viola and oscillator exploration of sine waves and microtonality. The glacial undulation of the sine wave dictates the sound and rhythm of the viola, while maintaining an extended, hypnotic sound.

The night is completed by the Sleeping Bags, a heavy shoegaze-leaning ensemble from Long Beach employing members of Princeton, Kisses, Gentle Hands and Combat!. Songs evoke the heavier moments of My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive while tempering the aggression with subtle electronic shades in the vein of early ambient Eno and Seefeel."

Not because I think people need another opportunity to peer into my life or read my ramblings, but as a sort of photo album to help me remember things that I see throughout the day. I've always wanted to include random snapshots on this page but have found it tedious to come home and upload photos and by the time I get home, I've usually talked myself out of it.

For this time lapse contest I basically tried to find an event in Los Angeles that would have a lot of people in one place that I could pan across, and settled on the Chinese New Year Parade in Chinatown.

I used my Canon T2i 18-55mm kit lens mounted to an egg timer to achieve the pans, and basically shot around the parade route at 1 second intervals using Magic Lantern firmware, for 5-15 minutes at a time. I then stitched together everything in Final Cut Pro, and did the Tilt Shift shots in Motion. In total I used about 1100 photos shown at 24fps.

Rarebit The Destroyer - Responsibility Stress Release by COMBAT!

Justin Hopkins, founding member of Sequins and Skeletons, has started producing music under the name Rarebit the Destroyer and finished an album's worth of material. In the years that I have known Justin, I watched this album take on multiple forms (including a few instances where he nearly abandoned the project to start from scratch). His work ethic was always inspiring and I couldn't have been happier when he told me he had finished work on all the songs.

During the process, I was lucky enough to be asked to contribute to one of the songs that had also included drumming by Grant C'De Baca, a.k.a. TIGERBITCH. Justin felt the song was missing something so I started working on a proper intro for it and once we were both happy with it, the song was done.

I can't wait for the rest of the world to hear this album.

The Sleeping Bags

The Sleeping Bags were a project that was started in the summer of 2009. I was asked by my friend, Matt Kivel, to assist in the production of a few songs that he had written and wanted to take in a new direction. Rounding out the group would be Jesse Kivel and Abe Burns.

We holed up in the production room at KXLU for two nights and began tracking five Sleeping Bags songs plus one song Jesse had written for the group. After all the guitars, drums, bass, and vocals had been tracked, I took the songs back to my studio and began adding layers of synthesizer and manipulated samples.

As I resumed work on the next COMBAT! album, Abe Burns took the songs and began mixing them in his studio. A few months passed and now we have a 7 inch out with Mystery Claws on the Jodie and Victor label in the UK.

I have no excuse for not posting this sooner.

One of my close friends, Sandra, released a collection of her personal recordings from 2007 through 2009 under the alias, Obi Lori. Nearly all of the songs were recorded by Sandra in her Paris apartment. She played all of the instruments, minus a few tracks which were collaborations with Space Equator (Obi Lori and Space Equator are also collaborators of Rarebit and will be featured on his upcoming release). Although the songs were recorded over the span of a few years, they are infused with something that I can't describe. There is a quality about the recordings that manages to reveal the subtle details of her intricate playing yet allow the textural elements to blend in perfectly with her soothing voice.

Rarebit did a great job on the artwork.

Sandra and I are going to be working together on a batch of songs which I hope to include on my next album. I will be releasing one of those songs in the following weeks on this website.

I have two very special events coming up.

The first is a free show at Driftwood (http://www.driftwoodla.com) where I will be performing with Las Flores Project. Driftwood is David Browne's new shop. You might be familiar with his old shop, The Berdhouse Gallery (http://www.berdhousegallery.com). Driftwood is located near Sunset Junction in Silver Lake. The address is 3938 Sunset. Check the flier.

The second is Good God! - A bi-monthly event which will take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month at the Mandrake. I will be hosting it along with my compadre, Alex Stassi. Every other week we will be playing records and inviting some special friends to bring their records. To kick it off, we will have Christian of Las Flores Project come and join us. In addition, we will be celebrating the departure of Michael Sweeney. Michael is one of my good friends and he's moving away to the windy city. Buy him a drink or something.

My friend, Rob, runs a website called The Green Diamond and he just sent me a copy of his new video "Rich Mahogany." Rob did a really great job on the video. The skating and editing are top notch. Thanks to everyone that came out to the KXLU Fundrazor show. Your support was greatly appreciated and will help keep KXLU alive. All the bands did really well. The highlight for me had to be Foot Village. Everytime I see them, they get better and better.

This Thursday, I'll be performing/DJ'ing at the R Bar in Koreatown. I was asked by my friend Pat Pat. I might do a COMBAT! set early in the night and just play records for the rest of it. It should be a time to get wild.

If you don't know, Las Flores Project is the musical stylings of Christian Banks. Christian is originally from LA but now calls New York City home. He's made the trek out to the west coast to spend time with family and friends, but more importantly, to drop the sickest beats on the heads of the wackest fools.

His music brings together all of my favorite elements in an totally original way. I back this dude 100% and I think you'll be impressed if you make it to one of these shows. He released an album not too long ago and WESC put it out. So next time you're in there, put down the Steve Aoki mixtape and pick up Colores y Memorias.
